The data presented in this paper were collected from the DreamMarket cryptomarket and covered a nearly one-year time period from March 2018 to January 2019, until DreamMarket was shut down in February 2019 (Madore, 2019). At that time, DreamMarket was the largest existing cryptomarket with over 60,000 listings for drugs (Knight, 2019). A recent statistical bulletin described the overall amount, price and physical forms of fentanyl available on six cryptomarkets over a 51-day period in the beginning of 2019 (Ball et al., 2019).
He was treated by EMTs with naloxone, and his mental status and respiratory rate improved. His brother reported that the boy had taken a blue tablet labeled “M30,” which the boy believed to be oxycodone. A urine test was positive for both fentanyl and cocaine (from Joynt & Wand, 2021). If you suddenly stop using fentanyl, you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Stop Overdose

Our study presents a detailed description of the type, average amount and shipment origin of novel synthetic opioids advertised on one cryptomarket (DreamMarket) over a 10-months period (March 2018-January 2019). It is one of the first studies to describe and quantify the types, amounts, available weights, prices and shipment origins and destination of fentanyl, fentanyl analogs and other novel synthetic opioid products sold on the darknet. Fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, “synthetic heroin” and other novel synthetic opioid substances represent only 3.3% of all opioid listings advertised on DreamMarket from March 2018 to January 2019. Although novel synthetic opioids constitute a small fraction of the overall illicit opioid market on the darknet, the potency of these opioids make the amount needed for one dose smaller compared to other opioids (Pardo et al., 2019). It also decreases the quantity needed to be sent by mail, lowering the chance for shipment to be detected and seized by customs or law enforcement agents (Baum, 2017; O’Connor, 2017).
What Does It Mean To Have A Substance Abuse Problem?
Any drug in any form (powder, pill) you get from a dealer, friend or an online source could have fentanyl in it. You can’t smell or taste fentanyl and fake pills made from fentanyl can look like real pills from a pharmacy. There’s no way to know if -or how much- fentanyl may be in them. From Xanax to cocaine, drugs or counterfeit pills purchased in nonmedical settings may contain life-threatening amounts of fentanyl.
Reported Drug Use Among Adolescents Continued To Hold Below Pre-pandemic Levels In 2023
- 95,011 opioid-related listings were collected through 26 crawling sessions.
- This week’s accumulated seizures of drugs, high velocity weapons and arrests of nearly 300 people on three continents makes the worldwide bust the largest-ever targeting fentanyl and opioid trafficking.
- While some opioids come directly from the plant, fentanyl is made in a lab by scientists using the same chemical structure.
- MUSIC Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, the first big dark market, he got prison for life.
Call your pharmacist or the manufacturer if you have questions or need help disposing of unneeded medication. Keep this medication in the packaging it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children, and in a location that is not easily accessible by others, including visitors to the home. Store fentanyl in a safe place so that no one else can use it accidentally or on purpose.
Why Is Fentanyl Dangerous?
95,011 opioid-related listings were collected through 26 crawling sessions. 33 novel synthetic opioids were identified in 3.3% of the collected listings. 44.7% of these listings advertised fentanyl (pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical) or fentanyl analogs for an average of 2.8kgs per crawl. “Synthetic heroin” accounted for 33.2% of novel synthetic opioid listings for an average 1.1kgs per crawl with 97.7% of listings advertised as shipped from Canada. Other novel synthetic opioids (e.g., U-47,700, AP-237) represented 22% of these listings for an average of 6.1kgs per crawl with 97.2% of listings advertised as shipped from China.

Dependence can cause extremely unpleasant withdrawal symptoms if the person stops using it. Repeated fentanyl use can lead to dependence, which means that the person’s body gets used to the presence of the drug. Darknet markets operate on the dark web, which is a part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines and requires special software to access. The regular internet, on the other hand, is accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a web browser.
How Can I Find Out If My Drugs Or Pills Contain Fentanyl?

A person with a substance use disorder might obtain fentanyl by misusing prescribed medication or acquiring the drug from an illegal laboratory. Misuse of fentanyl includes taking it orally, smoking it, snorting it, or injecting it. Fentanyl is synthetic, which means it is made entirely in laboratories and has no natural ingredients. It was developed as a prescription medicine for treating severe pain, such as pain after surgery. When used as prescribed, it is also very effective in treating cancer pain or other types of severe chronic pain that don’t respond to other pain medicines.1,2,3 Read more about opioids on the NIDA website.
ASAP Market is not the only dark web marketplace to – supposedly inadvertently – facilitate the fentanyl trade. The Investigator graph below shows that some vendors are active on a number of other dark markets, including Incognito, Vice City Market and World Market. This cluster of vendors receives fentanyl from a supplier based in Shanghai, China.

How Do People Take Fentanyl?
For other novel synthetic opioids, U-48,800 was advertised on average U.S.$.48.4 per gram for retail-level amounts and U.S.$14.2 per gram for listings offering wholesale-level amounts. U-47,700 was offered for an average price of U.S.$100.3 per gram for retail listings and an average price of U.S.$19.7 per gram for wholesale listings. Finally, “synthetic heroin” was advertised for an average price of U.S.$121.2 per gram for retail listings and an average price of U.S.$69.5 per gram for wholesale listings. For comparison, the average price for a gram of heroin was U.S.$206.5 for retail-level and U.S.$32.3 for wholesale-level amounts (Table 3).
- By 2015, the DEA put out an alert to law enforcement, because the agency suspected it was being mixed with heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
- This percentage may be even higher as fentanyl can easily be mixed with other drugs, often without the user’s knowledge, which has made it particularly dangerous.
- The eDarkTrends NER algorithm was designed to identify and group opioid drug mentions into higher-level classes (e.g., heroin, pharmaceutical fentanyl, non-pharmaceutical fentanyl).
- In addition, there were an average of 2,495 non-pharmaceutical oxycodone pills pressed with fentanyl available for purchase at each time point when data were collected.
- Whether prescribed or obtained illegally, there are serious risks to using fentanyl when it’s not dosed or used correctly — especially if you take too much or combine it with certain other medicines or alcohol.
- He was taken to a hospital, where he spent 3 days in the intensive care unit.
During the study period, an average of 2.8 kg of fentanyl-type substances were listed for sale at each time point of data collection. In addition, there were an average of 2,495 non-pharmaceutical oxycodone pills pressed with fentanyl available for purchase at each time point when data were collected. The information about the amount of fentanyl added to these pills was specified only by one vendor, in a total of 7 listings (out of 123), and was equal to 150μg. According to the study, AlphaBay operated from 2014 to 2017 and was considered the largest dark web marketplace at the time with more than 200,000 users.

What Should I Know About Storage And Disposal Of This Medication?
Again in 2011, both deaths from illegal fentanyl use and police encounters with illegal fentanyl use rose significantly. While it’s safe for your doctor to give you fentanyl in a medical setting, some people abuse it, which can lead to an overdose. In a medical setting, people take prescribed fentanyl for severe or chronic pain. As with any opiate, there is a risk of dependency, tolerance, misuse, and addiction with fentanyl. Physical dependence results in withdrawal symptoms when individuals suddenly stop taking the drug.
