When consumed, the drug binds to norepinephrine and dopamine transporters in the brain, inducing a high that is reported as similar to cocaine, methamphetamine (ice), and MDMA. Similar looking ecstasy pills can contain different ingredients and or strengths.
Pills Containing No MDMA
Samples were individually packed in mylar bags, covered with powdered dry ice, and transferred to a −80°C freezer in an adjacent room. The following day, samples were shipped on dry ice to the Johns Hopkins University Medical School for HPLC. Upon arrival, each brain was immediately stored in a −80°C freezer so that samples could be processed in parallel. On the day of HPLC assay, brains were removed from the freezer and cortical samples were dissected freehand from the frozen brains with a scalpel blade while subcortical samples were subsequently dissected out by a coronal slice blocking method followed by tissue punch.

Thus, at least in the primate, it appears that some neurochemical consequences of MDMA administration can occur in the absence of obvious behavioral correlates, although behavioral consequences may be uncovered by subsequent drug challenges (Ricaurte et al, 2000).
