Early Warning Signals For Predicting Cryptomarket Vendor Success Using Dark Net Forum Networks
After it was shut down in July 2017 following law enforcement action in the United States, Canada, and Thailand as part of Operation Bayonet, it was relaunched in August 2021 by the self-described co-founder and security administrator DeSnake. Designed the study, collected and cleaned the data, performed the study and result analysis, and drafted the manuscript. Supervised this process and gave suggestions on the study design and result analysis. All authors reviewed the report, commented on drafts of the manuscript, and approved the final report.
We report results for the unweighted in-degree, as we believe the number of neighbors, i.e., the number of potential customers, to be a better predictor of vendor success than the combined strength of the social ties to these neighbors. Weighted in-degree showed similar results, but with slightly fewer detected vendors that were not found by the activity indicators. Sales and post activity of recalled (in top 20%) and non-recalled (outside top 20%) users for topic engagement, betweenness centrality, and their intersection for September 2014, for current (a,b) and future success (c,d), respectively. 2b shows again positive difference scores between the top vendor percentile and all vendors. 2d shows mostly positive difference scores when comparing with the sub-top percentile, but with lower scores.

This means that the close connection between users with high PageRank value can be indicative of a boost in their perceived trust and may stimulate their sales. The relative difference score between the top percentile and all vendors and between the top and sub-top percentiles. Norbutas (2018) found that markets are constrained by their wider geography, particularly border controls, and the findings from within the Schengen area countries are complex. Germany sedative sales are low, matching the findings of Novak et al. (2016), but claiming that this precludes there being high usage in that country would be overstating the evidence. The same can be said of the Netherlands, with its almost non-existent sedative market.
The linear regression results therefore represent the estimated percentage of sales within any one country attributable to any one drug classification (the constant) followed by an estimation of the yearly percentage point change over the study period. All regressions were run with robust standard errors using the Huber-White sandwich method to account for a lack of normality in the dependents, heteroscedasticity, and data points with high leverage owing to the nature of the data collection process. To reduce the presence of noise in the S2S network, we consider only stable U2U pairs, i.e., pairs that have at least three transactions throughout the whole period of observation13. The trading volume generated by stable pairs is more than five times larger than that of non-stable pairs13. The S2S network is mostly populated by U2U-only sellers, followed by market-only, and market-U2U (see Supplementary Information Section S5). Until 2012, there is only one active market, namely Silk Road market, and hence no multihomer activity.

There is evidence of a move towards the more potent sedative alprazolam – already implicated as a source of problematic NMPDU in the USA – in Australia and the UK. Sales of drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilisers and antidementia drugs – all drugs with limited abuse potential – were negligible, indicating minimal levels of online cryptomarket procurement for self-medicating mental health problems. In Grand Theft Auto Online, players who purchase warehouses and garages for illicit cargo and stolen cars can buy/steal and sell them through trade on the “SecuroServ” syndicate website. After the Biker DLC, players can now purchase buildings for illegal drugs and counterfeit products manufacture, and distribute them through a darknet website called “The Open Road” where law enforcement cannot be notified of the player’s trade. Overall, stable U2U pairs have shown resilience to the systemic stress caused by COVID-19, suggesting, once again, that these trading relationships are fundamentally independent from the underlying DWMs. Monthly vendor recall of top vendor percentile (top 0–20% vendors in terms of sales) among the top 20% of all users based on the network measures and activity indicators. Higher vendor recall indicates a greater portion of the top vendor percentile was found.
Figure 3 shows that, for both current and future success, degree and closeness centrality generally have a worse vendor recall than any of our activity indicators. From May onwards, PageRank outperforms post activity and performs on par with the topics started indicator. Meanwhile, from July onwards, betweenness centrality consistently outperforms both the post activity and topics started activity indicators and performs (nearly) on par with topic engagement.
Sixth, we consider the cumulative mean interevent time for each entity i at time t, defined as the mean of the sequence of time interval between consecutive transactions of an entity until time t, which we denote by \(\phi _i(t)\). This feature is satisfied when \(\phi _i(t) \le \tau\), where \(\tau\) is the maximum value of mean interevent time. For each entity, we keep track of the cumulative values of the six features for each transaction performed by the entity over time. To be classified as a seller, an entity must simultaneously satisfy the six feature threshold criteria, as follows. 7, we show the largest component of the S2S network one year before the operation Bayonet and one year after.
Vendors in the Netherlands, a substantial source country for cannabis, MDMA-type products, cocaines, methamphetamine and opioids, seem to shun trade across all three of these product groups. For directed betweenness centrality, paths must follow the direction of the edges, while undirected betweenness can follow edges in either direction. Like for harmonic closeness centrality, the weighted variants use the inverse of the edge weights during shortest path computation, such that stronger connections equate to shorter distances. As direction and weighting can have a large impact on the probability of lying on a shortest path, we use the directed weighted betweenness in this study. We note that where the interpretation of paths was unclear for harmonic closeness centrality, this is less of an issue for betweenness centrality. After all, for betweenness centrality we rely on the fact that the user exists on many shortest paths, and is less reliant on its specific position in the path.

Individuals who are more affluent and better connected have often continued drug consumption with little interruption. Those who do not have access to these distribution modes have often pursued shifting and sometimes predatory street markets. The impact of the darknet has to be fully seen in this context, as one component of an evolving social-technical infrastructure for drug distribution and consumption may include harm-reduction advice such as drug-checking services 60. Cryptomarkets are part of an evolving trend where communities of PWUD adapt and develop technological systems to their ends. The cryptomarket distribution system is emblematic of the move to drug distribution by delivery, whether through the postal system or tailored distribution services.
