Europol confirmed to WIRED today that it was also able to recover the Wall Street Market backend server, providing investigators with an invaluable trove of evidence. The arrests were part of an effort by federal authorities to address “the growing number of illicit vendors operating on the darknet providing large quantities of harmful substances to thousands of people across the United States,” according to the Justice Department. Federal prosecutors have accused the men of operating 10 virtual storefronts on 17 different dark web marketplaces from September 2018 through February, the department said in a statement. In December 2023, the BKA and ZIT seized another major darknet marketplace, the ‘Kingdom Market,’ and arrested one of the administrators in the United States.
As a result of the action, the platform’s infrastructure in the Netherlands was taken offline and its administrator – a 30-year-old German national – was arrested in Barcelona, Spain. In parallel, measures were taken in Germany and Sweden against one moderator and six of the marketplace’s highest vendors, and assets worth €7.8 million seized. The Monopoly Market takedown was one of the largest law enforcement actions taken against a darknet marketplace. The resulting arrests overshadowed the 150 arrests made following the takedown of DarkMarket in 2021, and 179 following the takedown of Wall Street Market in 2019.

A moderator and six prominent vendors were arrested simultaneously in other countries, and officers seized assets worth about $9 million. This comes just months after international law enforcement raided the homes of individuals with suspected ties to a cybercrime group that stole millions from large companies and hospitals. Last year, Germany shut down the servers for the infamous Russian darknet marketplace Hydra and seized around seizing €23 million worth of Bitcoin. International authorities collaborated to shut down one of the largest dark web marketplaces, DarkMarket, in 2021, which led to the arrest of 150 alleged drug vendors.

Kraken DNM, which billed itself as Hydra’s Market’s successor, received $737 million on-chain in 2024.
In 2025, agencies will need to deploy a combination of advanced cyber tools, including AI-driven pattern recognition, blockchain analysis, and network infiltration strategies, to track illicit activity across multiple channels. Archetyp launched in May 2020 and quickly grew to become one of the most popular dark web markets with an estimated total transaction volume of €250 million (A$446 million). It had more than 600,000 users worldwide and 17,000 listings consisting mainly of illicit drugs including MDMA, cocaine and methamphetamine. Nemesis was established in 2021 and operated as a criminal marketplace on the darknet, an encrypted network within the Internet that can only be accessed with special anonymity-enhancing browsers.

Darknet Market And Fraud Shop BTC Revenues Decline Amid Years-long International Law Enforcement Disruption
Before these dark web marketplaces were shutdown, they sold a range of illegal products, from drugs to firearms. A series of law enforcement takedowns in the last few years have shaped the 2024 drug and fraud ecosystems. While 2024 was likely a record year for crypto crime revenue overall, darknet market (DNM) and fraud shop inflows fell, with DNMs receiving just over $2 billion in BTC on-chain, and fraud shops $225 million.
